Tips

  Get an early start

Most temples, shrines, and castles close at 5pm, so you’ll want to start your day early if you plan on visiting multiple sites.

  Go to a night illumination

Several temples will re-open in the evening for a special night illumination. Most popular are Kiyomizu-dera and Kodai-ji in Higashiyama.

  Experience traditional Japan

Kyoto is the best spot in Japan to have an authentic, traditional experience. The locals are extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and open to foreigners. Book a stay at a ryokan, enjoy a multi-course kaiseki ryori meal, or attend a maiko show.
