Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai is hands-down my favorite destination in Thailand. I knew it from the moment we stepped off the plane. Chiang Mai is culturally vibrant, the air is fresh, and there is an appreciation of simplicity in all things. Recently, Chiang Mai has become a popular spot for tourists which has resulted in a growing city. Nevertheless, it is a quick escape to the untouched mountains and jungles of Chiang Mai.
Things to do
- Spend a day with the elephants at one of the elephant sanctuaries or conservation farms
- Visit the most famous temple Wat Doi Suthep, overlooking the city
- Shop for bargain deals at the Night Bazaar
- Go on an adventure – ziplining, rafting, trekking, and hot air balloon rides are all popular
- Cuddle with the big cats at Tiger Kingdom
- Partake in a local festival, notably the Sky Lantern festival in November or the Songkran Water Festival, celebrating the Thai New Year
Tips
Stay at a family-owned villaYou’ll get a taste of daily life in Chiang Mai and learn all about the local culture. It’s been my experience that family-owned operations will go above and beyond to make you feel at home.
Learn a few basic words of ThaiA “thank you” (kob khun) goes a long way, and locals will be thrilled at your effort. You are also less likely to fall victim to any tourist scams, as your show of respect for the local culture will be appreciated.
Rent a motor bike and go exploringOf all the places in Thailand, I’d say this is the number one spot to rent a motor bike and enjoy the scenery. Explore the rice fields, back roads, and hidden temples at your leisure.
