Phuket
Phuket is one of the most popular beach destinations in Thailand. That being said, this area is heavy with tourists and all that comes with it. If you’re looking to be in party central, stay in Patong Beach near Bangla Road. If you prefer peace and relaxation, you’ll want to stay at the northern or southern end.
Personally, I recommend choosing a quieter spot for your accommodation and then finding your way to the main strip if you want a taste of the nightlife. I found the constant, aggressive peddling to be too much when I just wanted to read a book or have a drink and relax on the beach.
Things to do
- Take a longtail boat tour through Phang Nga Bay, stopping to see the famous James Bond Island and Koh Panyee, a small fishing village built entirely on wooden stilts
- Explore the Buddha Cave (Wat Suwan Khuha) to admire the giant reclining golden buddha and the impressive limestone caves
- Visit some of the famous temples, notably Wat Chalong
- Take a day trip to one of the smaller, remote islands such as Bon Island or the popular Phi Phi Island
- Take in the views from the top of Khao Rang Hill or Kata Viewpoint
- Plan a night out on Soi Bangla, the sin city of Thailand. Clubs, go-go bars, and the ever famous ping pong shows (warning: as a female, you will be forever changed)
Tips:
Book a tour packageA full-day tour in Phuket will often include 4-5 destinations, meals, transportation, and a tour guide. An organized tour also takes away from the stress of having to plan anything yourself!
Rent a motor bike and go exploringOn the flip side, consider renting a motorbike or bicycle and go exploring on your own. You’ll see a side of Thailand away from the rush of tourists, and make your own authentic experience.
Attend a local festival or eventFollow the local tourism page on social media prior to your trip to stay up-to-date on any upcoming events or festivals in the area (see: Phuket101).
